WORKS are underway to clear trees and debris lodged along the Mtshabezi River as authorities move to restore safe passage along the flooded bridge linking Gwanda to surrounding areas.

The bridge, whose stability was compromised by recent floods, is also set to undergo minor repairs, while a makeshift footbridge damaged during the heavy rains will be rehabilitated.

The District Civil Protection Committee said clearing operations will result in occasional closures of the bridge to allow a crane to remove large debris.

“There will be renovation of Mtshabezi Bridge with all materials and crane being provided by Blanket Mine. The stability of the bridge has been affected by the floods which hit the area. All road users are advised that crossing of the bridge will be controlled as a team is trying to remove all big trees,” reads part of the statement.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution and comply with officials directing traffic during the ongoing works.

Gwanda District has been among the hardest hit following heavy rains that led to flooding after a nearby dam breach, resulting in widespread infrastructure damage and disruption of essential services, including water supply.

The flooding also affected the Gwanda Municipality water pumping station, damaging critical equipment and leaving the town without water for several days.

A nearby cottage was inundated, with a family losing valuables, while huge volumes of water submerged the Mtshabezi River Bridge for over 24 hours, cutting off access for both motorists and pedestrians.

The bridge is a key link connecting Gwanda town to Blanket Mine, Maphisa District and several business centres.

Meanwhile, the floods destroyed a low-hanging makeshift bridge as well as another temporary crossing near the prison camp at Hamden Plots, leaving many residents stranded.

Authorities say restoration efforts are ongoing as part of broader measures to repair damaged infrastructure and restore normalcy in the district.
