Chief Chireya of Gokwe North has appealed to Government and non-governmental organisations to help his subjects by sinking boreholes in the area which he said was very dry, with some homesteads going for days without water.
In an interview recently, Chief Chireya said water was becoming a very scarce commodity in his area due to the prolonged dry spell, with villagers walking for over 30km in search of the precious commodity.
He said few boreholes that were in the area have since run dry.
“We have a problem of water in my area and I don’t know how urgent can our Government and other well-wishers assist us,” said Chief Chireya.
“We have few boreholes that have been helping people, but they have since run dry.
“The situation is not healthy, people are walking long distances to fetch water and at times they spend the whole day looking for water.”
Chief Chireya said the situation has resulted in a crime rate surge as some women were being raped while searching for water.
“We have had an increase in rape cases in the area, with girls and women being waylaid and raped while on their way to fetch water,” he said.
“We hope if we get assistance and have boreholes, such unfortunate incidences could be avoided.”
Chief Chireya said the water situation was also affecting their livestock.
