Water games, Afcon yellow bones and call barring

Khuphuka Nasingeni
SINCE everyone is almost always glued to their phones nowadays, I will touch on something that many people can relate to. There is this video that has gone viral on WhatsApp of this little boy resisting a bath and two ladies dressed in west African attire battling to keep him under control so that they could separate him from dirt!A This kind of relationship with water is definitely undesirable. Or is it? We need to develop closer relations with water, and improve the relations from the bath tub or bucket to the swimming pool or dam, whichever the case may be.

It looks like our practice of playing in water has endured for generations but the heavy rains this year have taken the fun out of many adventures. You see, we used to play in shallow waters since that was all the rainy seasons could accord us. However, this yearas bountiful rains have caught many a youngster (and adults alike) by surprise.

We used to derive so much fun from taking along guys that could not swim to the dam and dragging them to the deep end where we would momentarily lose them and count the number of cups that they would drink as they struggled to stay afloat. As a safety precaution we did not allow the victim to drink more than three cups as they could easily lose their strength and disappear under the water. It is only now that we realise how we endangered our friendsa lives, and why we would get a beating from any adult that stumbled on us frolicking in the muddy water.

I am not an expert at life skills nor do I have a firm grasp of the new curriculum but methinks with the so-called climate change we may need to incorporate life skills that take cognisance of the changing weather patterns. The cases of drowning really are a cause for concern, and the way I see it we need to do something to arm our children since children especially boys, will always be boys.

The guys that do not have a solid relationship with water, however, are safe from floods and all that since they shall never be found anywhere near such.

As I was saying, boys will always be boys. Parents need to understand that and help them grow into men. I have not had a relationship with boarding masters so I would not know about water boarding or any Guantanamo exercises at schools. And I thought human rights was a subject under the new curriculum, how wrong I was!

With the O-level results now out, we all hope that we are bringing up our children in a manner that shall make us proud in future. If we make them believe violence solves problems, we should not be surprised when there is a rise in domestic violence in future, that we would have nurtured at home and in schools.

Talking about results, there is this WhatsApp original story of this nephew that went to collect results only to come back and inform the uncle that the results ran out since only a few were made available.A School authorities, he said, advised him and others that got there after the results had run out, to try next year, with the hope enough results would be produced then. Zimsec please!

Anyway, we are back at the spot, and after a drink or two these and other matters came up for discussion. We discuss matters both big and small. Talking of boys being boys, uMzo swore that he saw some ginger-haired Afcon hero with yellow bones in town, downing and supplying the wise waters to anyone that threw a smile in his direction!

There are those that wanted to criticise such guys but uMzo stood his ground saying we should let the boys enjoy themselves, and also help redistribute wealth through their expenditure choices!

My task to find a relative among the boys that got almost $30 000 each for their Gabon experience did not bear fruit as the gods did not smile on me this time around. Can you imagine even the buying spree by the Afcon windfall guys eluded me.

The year has started rather badly but on the positive side I am watching from the sidelines and should these guys fall on hard times I will go prophetic and claim a?a?I saw it comingaa.

Anyway, phones were quite busy at the bar in the evening the other day and guys appeared to be dodging messages and occasional cursing could be heard around the room. I have never received so many requests from guys to activate call barring while some wanted to know how to exit WhatsApp for a week. I believe if the incoming messages were promising the guys presents they would have loved to stay on to receive those presents. It is at times such as these that one wishes Valentine was never born!
