A 42-year-old man who married a 13-year-old teenager with her grandmotheras blessing landed himself in trouble.

The matter came to light when Jeremiah Jerera of Mlauzi Village appeared before Shurugwi resident magistrate Evia Matura charged with having sexual intercourse with a minor.

He was sentenced to nine months in prison as two months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecuting, Nyengeterai Nechivara told the court that on 7 December last year, Jerera did a piece job at the complainantas homestead when her grandmother, whose name was not mentioned in court, told him that she wanted him to be her granddaughteras husband.

She then left the two in her homestead and proceeded to Bulawayo.

Jerera then asked the teen if she wanted to be his wife and she agreed.

On December 28, Jerera took the complainant to his auntas place for introductions and she stayed there for some weeks.

The two then engaged in sexual intercourse several times with the complainantas consent. They then started staying together as husband and wife.

On 13 January this year, police officers identified as Constable Kambanje and Constable Rufu patrolling Mlauzi Village were told by concerned villagers about the issue.

The two police officers proceeded to Jereraas place at around 1am and found him together with his teen wife. They two were taken to Tongogara Police Station and a report was made.

The teenager was medically examined and a medical report was produced proving that the two were sexually active. .
