Water rationing for Shurugwi

THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has introduced water rationing in Shurugwi Town due to receding water levels in the mining towns’ supply dam. Zinwa’s Shurugwi District Engineer Happiness Dafi said Shurugwi town depended on Impala Dam, which she said was now at 60 percent. She said every year from September to December they were forced to ration water. Eng Dafi said the water authority was considering developing Aberfoyle Dam to boost water supply in Shurugwi.

“We have started consulting residents and companies alerting them of the dwindling of water levels in the dam so that they use water wisely,” she said.

“The long term plan is to develop another water source to boost water supplies. The challenge we have is that funding for such a huge development project from the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) remains limited.” In recent years, water rationing forced residents to resort to using water from disused mines, exposing themselves to health challenges.
