Water supplies normalise

Local Government, Rural and Urban Development on the state of water supplies in Harare, Dr Mahachi said the two transformers were restored on Tuesday.

He said this resulted in Morton Jaffray being able to run six pumps supplying 500 mega litres of water a day up from the previous 250 mega litres a day. “Now we are running at full capacity. We are actually running six big pumps as we speak, which is more than 500 mega litres of water per day and we think we will maintain the situation,” he said.

Dr Mahachi said the impact of increased pumping capacity will result in lesser supply interruptions in most high density suburbs and sporadic supplies in low density areas. According to the council’s new water supply schedule Mabvuku and Tafara are now receiving water for five days a week.

Chikurubi is now receiving water for four days a week while Mbare and most western suburbs are now getting water all the time except for Gunhill in Dzivaresekwa, Budiriro 4 and 5, Glen View 8 and Hatcliffe.

Dr Mahachi said these suburbs are receiving sporadic water supplies during the day but they are getting water in the evening. He said water supplies to the low density suburbs has also improved with areas such as Greendale receiving water four days a week and Mount Pleasant thrice a week.

Mount Pleasant, Philadelphia and Glen Lorne are receiving water thrice, twice and one a week respectively. However Borrowdale, Ballantyne Park, Highlands and Mount Pleasant Heights are not getting water supplies at all.

“Previously, we were focusing in high density areas, but now we think we can also supply the northern suburbs with water having done a lot of work on the ground to make sure that happens,” Dr Mahachi said.

A survey on some of the suburbs proves that council is to some extent sticking to its new schedule. Mabvuku and Tafara residents confirmed that water supplies have improved as they get water almost everyday.

But some Budiriro 5 residents said they were still experiencing sporadic water supplies even at night. In Highfield, Mbare and Glen View residents said they are now getting water all the time.

Previously, all these suburbs were receiving sporadic water supplies while northern suburbs did not get any supplies.
