We are betting on London route to drive tourism, trade

The launch of Air Zimbabwe’s direct Harare-London service marks a significant milestone for the country and reflects the progress made under the Second Republic.

It has been 14 years since Air Zimbabwe last operated flights to London, making the resumption of the route a major achievement for the national airline.

The service will reconnect Zimbabwe with one of its most important international markets, benefiting the diaspora community, boosting tourism, facilitating trade and improving cargo transportation.

The route will be served by an Airbus A330-300 aircraft with a capacity of 302 passengers, comprising 30 business class seats and 272 economy class seats.

The development aligns with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 of becoming a prosperous and empowered upper middle-income society and supports the objectives of the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), under which Air Zimbabwe is expected to play a leading role in promoting tourism, trade and regional integration.

To achieve these goals, the airline is focusing on fleet modernisation, restoring international routes, strengthening domestic connectivity and improving services for the Zimbabwean diaspora while supporting the growth of the tourism sector.

Vision and strategy

Air Zimbabwe’s vision is to become the best airline in the market and the pride of Zimbabwe by 2030.

Its mission is to provide safe and reliable air transport services that promote social development while facilitating trade, investment and tourism.

The resumption of the Harare-London route is a key step towards achieving that vision and represents one of the major milestones under the airline’s transformation programme.

The airline’s turnaround strategy is built around the SOAR framework: S – Stabilise operations; O – Optimise financial performance; A – Attract and retain passengers; and R – Restore and expand the route network.

The launch of the London service on July 22, 2026, is part of the final pillar of restoring and expanding Air Zimbabwe’s international network.

The airline’s broader strategy is to first consolidate its domestic operations before expanding into regional and international markets while taking advantage of commercially viable opportunities.

Why London?

According to market data from Airbus and Boeing based on origin and destination passenger traffic, the Harare-London route is the busiest long-haul travel market from Zimbabwe.

This makes the route one of the airline’s most commercially attractive opportunities and a logical starting point for rebuilding its international network.

Other priority routes under consideration include Harare-Dubai and services to China, reflecting growing demand for travel and trade between Zimbabwe and these destinations.

The relaunch of the London service therefore marks the beginning of a broader programme to restore Air Zimbabwe’s presence on key international routes.

Partnerships

Partnerships and collaboration remain central to Air Zimbabwe’s growth strategy.

The airline recognises that achieving long-term success requires working closely with aviation partners, strategic investors and other stakeholders.

As the saying goes, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

This philosophy underpins Air Zimbabwe’s approach to rebuilding the airline, expanding its network and improving operational efficiency.

The airline has welcomed the strong support it continues to receive from its shareholder — Government — as well as other strategic partners committed to revitalising the national carrier.

Through these collaborations, Air Zimbabwe aims to build a sustainable, competitive airline that supports Zimbabwe’s economic transformation by connecting the country to key global markets, promoting tourism, facilitating trade and serving the growing needs of the Zimbabwean diaspora.
