THE Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) says it is ready to host the inaugural Kwese Sports Victoria Falls Sevens, with visiting teams expected to arrive today.
Victoria Falls Primary School plays host to the games tomorrow and Sunday. ZRU general manager Sifiso Made said preparations are going on well.
“Teams are arriving on Friday and as for now all preparations are going on well. Everyone is geared for the games, which will be beamed live on Kwese Sport channels,” said Made.
The participating countries include Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe, while Sierra Leone withdrew from the tournament.
Zimbabwe are expected to field three teams, the Cheetahs, Goshawks and President’s VII, while Botswana and Zambia are sending two teams each and Namibia one side.
The Cheetahs make up Group A with Namibia, Botswana and Zambia A, while Group B has Zambia, President’s VII, Goshawks and Botswana A. Made said besides the seniors, there will also be the Under-19s Petra, Mbare Academy, Goromonzi, Hwange, Plumtree and Botswana Under-19 taking part. He said countries like South Africa will take part in next year’s edition of the tournament. Workmen were busy putting final touches to the school ground yesterday.
One of the local organisers Emmanuel Tivatyi said the venue is almost 100 percent ready, while a ZRU advance team was expected to work on the erection of poles and ensure the pitch is ready.
Zimbabwe sevens rugby team coach Gilbert Nyamutsamba and his troops are already in the resort town, with their sights on winning the tournament.
