Last week I received an e-mail from someone asking why should they watch ZBC-TV yet we are in the DStv era? With my criticism, the e-mailer said I should concentrate more with DStv because those are some of the Hollywood standards.
I laughed.
Well, we should be patriotic – charity begins at home and I love ZBC-TV programming, though some people may think I don’t like it because of my criticisms.
I am actually entitled to my opinion and surprisingly many share the same sentiments but the station is improving each day.
I liked and enjoyed how they covered the Davis Cup tennis tournament live, which is what the people want. I then asked myself what is it that is needed for an event to be covered live?
Not talking about the funds or adverts but Saturday was the Zim Dancehall Awards night.
They deserved the same mileage as the Mafikozolo concert.
Yes, some may argue why give them such prominence but the honest truth is that this is where we are going.
I mean the 21st century, entertainment world.
Who drives what, who owns what and who wears what, among other shows.
Check how SABC, VUZU, E-Hollywood and MTV Base among others cover such events.
That is actually news by the way. Imagine how they trend on social media.
By doing so you always keep your fans on the television apart from falling in love with your programming.
Let me be frank with you, if ZBCTV wanted us to be glued on the telly they could have covered the event live because it was a first, of the event being well organised and no violence despite the negativity that always accompanies them.
However, some said, it was difficult to deal with the matter because you couldn’t predict the event’s success.
The weekend was also fun-packed and I watched the 2015 AMVCAS.
Umm, Africa we still have a long way to go.
When it comes to producing or organising awards, I always thought Zimbabwe is way back because of various incidents and mistakes that could have made the show better but I never knew Africa (in this case Nigeria) still has the same issue.
The lighting and big stage was perfect but the AMVCAS – Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards which has been dubbed the Africa’s Oscars were so lame.
Believe me, it is just the resources they have but the show was not entertaining after all the waiting.
Imagine that such a big show, the sound effect was not good especially on performances or maybe was it the performers?
Internationally acclaimed Nigerian-born duo P Square didn’t amuse many and worse they closed the show with some already leaving while they were busy doing their thing.
I still salute the red carpet moments and interviews. Africans now know how to pull the look, from fashion to music. On social media, my journalist friends from Ghana, Botswana and Zambia also shared the same sentiments that the awards were more about Nigeria and boring. Maybe we expected too much, but it wasn’t our fault because they had brainwashed us with the Oscars – Grammy mind, thinking we are going to have the same.
But if we want to be Africans, let it be so?
I won’t dwell much on that but as privileged as I am, last year I was invited to the African content showcase in Mauritius of which I had a clear understanding on why it’s either Nigeria or South Africa. It is all to do with quality content.
Since it’s AMVCA, wasn’t it wiser to have maybe presenters or celebrities from different countries since it was more of one country dominating?
Food for thought.
Zimbabwean television personality and host of StarGist, Vimbai Mutinhiri, did not impress at all. She could have done it better with more energy and worse on some jokes.
But keep the diamond shining girl, as you are fully representing us well on the television.
Till next time, don’t forget to play with the remote.
