We walk not by sight but by faith

“NOW in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out for fear.

“But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.’ And Peter answered Him and said, ‘Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.’

“So He said, ‘Come.’ And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, ‘Lord, save me!’” — Matthew 14:25-30.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus invites Peter to walk on water. Peter then takes a bold step of faith. However, when he becomes distracted by the turbulent waves, his faith wavers and he begins to sink. Jesus rescues him, rebuking him for his doubt. Peter’s fear stemmed from focusing on the physical elements of the storm.

Had he closed his eyes and ears, he might have maintained his faith and successfully walked on water. This story teaches us the importance of guarding our hearts and minds diligently, not allowing external circumstances to shake our trust in God.  Instead, we should focus on the spiritual realm, the Word of God, which is the true foundation of our faith.

As 2 Corinthians 5:7 reminds us, “We walk by faith, not by sight.” Peter’s experience demonstrates that trusting in Jesus Christ, even when faced with seemingly impossible challenges, is essential for overcoming fear and maintaining a strong faith.

We have all faced turbulent times in our lives. In those moments, it is tempting to doubt God’s presence and power. But Jesus invites us to trust Him, to take a step of faith, even when circumstances seem impossible.

When the waves of debt and financial struggles crash against us, Jesus says: “Come, walk on the water.”

Trust Him to provide.

When the storms of relationship conflicts rage, Jesus says: “Come, walk on the water.”

Trust Him to bring peace and restoration.

When the turbulence of health crises and emotional pain threatens to overwhelm us, Jesus says: “Come, walk on the water.”

Trust Him to bring healing and comfort.

Like Peter, we may doubt, but Jesus is always there to rescue us. He says: “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

This is not to condemn us, but to encourage us to trust Him more.

Let us remember Peter’s experience and apply it to our lives.

Take a step of faith, even when the circumstances seem impossible. Focus on Jesus, not the turbulent waves. Trust Him to provide, to bring peace, to heal and to comfort.

May our faith be strengthened as we walk on the water with Jesus, trusting Him to guide us through life’s turbulent times.

Always remember that He says to you, as Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
