WARRIORS captain Marvellous Nakamba believes they will be a different beast under the guidance of new coach Mario Marinica at the AFCON finals in Morocco next month.
Zimbabwe are currently in camp in Saudi Arabia, preparing for friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar.
These games, Nakamba says, are crucial steps toward shaping a team ready to make history at AFCON.
Drawn in a challenging group with Egypt, Angola, and South Africa, Nakamba says the Warriors are determined to break new ground by reaching the knockout stages for the first time.
“We might be preparing to play against Algeria at the moment but our focus is on finding methods that can help us have answers at AFCON,” Nakamba said.
“We have a vibrant team with talented youngsters who blend well with experienced guys.
“Our job now is to work the magic and find the connection and artistry within the team that will see us click at AFCON.”
The Luton midfielder welcomed the arrival of Mario, saying the team has quickly adapted to his philosophy.
“We want to win our games and the foundation to do so has been laid. We’re only seeking to cement it,” he said.
With a balanced mix of youth and experience, Nakamba believes Zimbabwe can surprise even the strongest opponents.
The upcoming clash against Algeria, he added, will be a perfect rehearsal for what lies ahead in Morocco.
“If we work on perfection, I am optimistic we will be able to take down any opponent who comes our way,” said Nakamba.
“Preparing against countries like Algeria helps the boys to get used to high intensity opponents.
“We know Egypt and Algeria have a similar style of play, so this is the best practice match we can have.”
Nakamba praised the unity and commitment in the squad, saying every player understands the weight of representing the nation.
“It’s all about honour and cementing your status in the books of history.
“Everyone who wears the national colours turns out to be exemplary and a role model.
“We have to be good role models and we are dedicated for that reason,” he said.
