Provision of advance information on weather data remains critical for the Meteorological Services Department as agricultural activity in the country largely depends on the weather patterns despite the remarkable advances in agricultural technology over the past years, an agro-meteorologist has said.
Speaking at the Harare Show Grounds yesterday, Mr John Mpuro said: “Daily, seasonal, and annual forecasts are important to every farmer and all who are interested in agriculture. The forecasts play a vital role in crop existence.’’
“Though the Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum is already under way in coming up with a seasonal forecast for the whole of Africa, we at the Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe also come up with our own forecasts to help our farmers,” he said.
“We analyse how frequent we experienced droughts in Zimbabwe in the past years and try to come up with a solution, so that Government can plan in terms of irrigation systems and crops to plant,” he said.
