THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Matchday 19 programme produced plenty of talking points, with some clubs strengthening their ambitions while others were left to rue missed opportunities in a weekend that again underlined how competitive the championship race and battles for positions have become.

At Barbourfields, the eagerly anticipated Battle of Zimbabwe between Highlanders and Dynamos ended in a 1-1 draw.

Bosso, who had endured a difficult week marked by players’ concerns over outstanding dues and disrupted preparations, showed character to avoid defeat against their traditional rivals.

The result extended the fierce rivalries’ tradition of closely fought encounters, although neither side would have been fully satisfied with sharing the spoils.

Elsewhere, Chicken Inn secured a valuable 2-1 victory away to Triangle at Gibbo. The Gamecocks were resilient when collecting maximum points and continue their push up the standings.

In Mutare, Manica Diamonds and FC Platinum settled for a 1-1 draw at Sakubva, while Hardrock produced the result of the weekend with an emphatic 4-0 demolition of ZPC Kariba at Chahwanda.

Bulawayo Chiefs marked the re-opening of Luveve in style with a 2-0 victory over Agama.

Sunday’s matches also provided plenty of intrigue. Simba Bhora edged FC Hunters 1-0 away from home to remain firmly in the title mix. TelOne and MWOS shared spoils in a 1-1 draw at Ascot, while Ngezi Platinum Stars and Scottland played out a goalless draw at Baobab.

The draw between Highlanders and Dynamos meant neither traditional giant managed to gain significant ground, while Chicken Inn and Hardrock enjoyed highly productive weekends.

Simba Bhora’s narrow victory kept the former champions in contention, but dropped points for FC Platinum, Ngezi Platinum Stars and CAPS United highlighted just how difficult it has become to consistently collect maximum points in the second half of the season.

With every point now carrying added significance, the battle for the championship, continental places and survival promises to intensify in the coming weeks.
