We’ll persuade President to stay, say war veterans

The War Veterans League has joined many Zanu PF provinces and wings calling on President Mnangagwa to reconsider his decision not to seek re-election when his term of office expires in 2028, saying they want the nation to benefit from his leadership capabilities.

In an interview with ZBC News last night, Zanu PF Secretary for War Veterans, Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Cde Douglas Mahiya, said they will try to engage the President so he continues in office for him to fulfil his Vision 2030 of an empowered upper-middle income society.

“As war veterans and people generally in Zimbabwe, we are not looking at people as to who should lead Zimbabwe, fit to lead (but we want one who has the capability),” he said.

Cde Mahiya said if the pace at which development projects implemented since 2018 had been the same speed at which development was being ushered to the people in prior years, Zimbabwe would have been miles away from its regional peers.

“So we don’t need personalities, we want to look at a person’s capabilities to be able to deliver to the people of Zimbabwe their social, economic and political aspirations.”

Cde Mahiya said owing to President Mnangagwa’s proven track record as a great leader who is development oriented, they will ask him to continue leading the country “because we want to see the next generation benefiting from the resources, from the development trends being introduced by the President Mnangagwa”.

“The question (is not) on whether he wants to rest or not, we can beg him to stay so that we benefit from his capabilities.

“We don’t go about complying with individual thinking, expressions or understanding, we stick to the original principles of the revolution,” said Cde Mahiya.

Masvingo Province was the first to implore the President to stay on, followed by the Zanu PF Midlands Youth League.

Party youths in Mashonaland East, Bulawayo and Matabeleland North provinces, among others, have also requested that President Mnangagwa stays on.
