LONDON. — Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger admitted that for the time being he is not even considering Chelsea as English Premiership soccer title rivals as the Gunners look to make a move up the table after the international break.
The convincing 3-0 win against Manchester United 13 days ago re-awoke Arsenal’s title ambitions after a stumbling start to the season while Chelsea stumbled to their fourth defeat in eight games to leave them just four points above the relegation zone.
Arsenal go into tomorrow’s game against Watford in second place, two points behind leaders Manchester City and that is all Wenger is looking at for now.
“At the moment the top eight can mathematically compete,” he said. “But I would say five or six teams are in the race.
“Chelsea have some ground to make up. It is different to anybody out there at the moment, even Chelsea.
“Of course when you have many teams in front of you it is difficult to catch up but they have the quality.
“But I don’t care too much about them. My worry is about my team and what we can do.
“We are two points behind the league leaders and what all the other teams do is up to them but I just want to say mathematically you cannot rule anybody out at the moment.”
The Blues have endured a terrible start to the new season and are currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table.
The west Londoners’ abysmal run has prompted many observers to rule Jose Mourinho’s men out of the title race.
Wenger has been shocked by the Premier League champions’ poor start to the new campaign but is refusing to rule Jose Mourinho’s men out of the hunt for the title.
It is 11 years since Arsenal last lifted the title but ahead of yesterday morning’s AGM Wenger hinted that this was the best chance the team had since then to win the Premier League crown. — AFP.
