We’re neutral on Zim, Swiss minister

looking at ways of assisting Zimbabwe.
“We are looking at increasing our support next year, depending on the political situation. Switzerland is a neutral country. We do not belong to any grouping,” he said.

Mr Rossier, who had earlier met Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and other Government officials, briefed President Mugabe on his tour of projects funded by Switzerland in Masvingo province.

Switzerland is funding sanitation, health and irrigation projects in the province.
Zimbabwe is reeling under illegal sanctions imposed by the West at the behest of Britain and its European Union allies.

Although it is not a member of the EU, Switzerland and other neutral members of the 27-member group were reluctant to cultivate ties with Zimbabwe.

Yesterday Mr Rossier could not hide his joy at meeting the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
On greeting President Mugabe, Mr Rossier said he “was shaking the hands of history”.
