We’re under siege

CLIMATE change remains a real threat to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and urgent action is required to counter its undesirable impacts, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Edward Kallon has said.

Speaking at the Africa Transition to Green Energy and Waste Management Expo held in Harare, Kallon said the world was now suffering devastating effects of climate change.

Kallon emphasised that urgent action is required to counter climate change and its impacts on achieving the SDGs.

He urged the world to shift from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power.

These renewable resources are inexhaustible, emit little to no greenhouse gases, and do not contribute to global warming, he said.

“Our planet is at a critical point due to the devastating effects of climate change.

“It is critical we realise the urgency of shifting from fossil fuels to alternative energy sources.

“It is my sincere hope that this Expo will enlighten our understanding on the consequences of our current over-reliance on non-renewable energy.”

He added:

“Fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas have been the primary sources of energy for centuries, but their use contributes to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and in turn, causes global warming, extreme weather conditions, and a rise in sea levels.

“We cannot deny the fact that climate change is real and has disastrous effects on our health, economy and overall well-being.

“By transitioning to green energy, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions and ensure a sustainable future for ourselves and the future generations.”
