Health and Child Welfare Minister, Dr Henry Madzorera, said this in the House of Assembly on Wednesday while responding to a question by Bubi legislator Mr Clifford Sibanda on Government policy regarding nurses who were bonded but failing to get jobs.
“It is our intention to continue to bond health workers. The problem we have now is temporary and we are working to ensure that all those churned out from our institutions are absorbed,” he said.
Minister Madzorera said graduate nurses had been allocated posts but were still to be absorbed into service because of Government’s freeze on all posts because of budgetary constraints.
“All nurses who qualified have been allocated posts, they have jobs waiting for them, what we are just waiting for is Treasury concurrence that there is money to pay them,” he said.
Dr Madzorera said Government was in talks with neighbouring countries to export some nurses but said it was those with working experience that were in demand.
Despite Government freeze on all vacant posts in the public service, some health institutions especially those in rural areas have no nurses and other health personnel like midwives, laboratory technicians and others.
Minister Madzorera said it was important that Parliament lobby Government to unfreeze the ban on recruitment of personnel.
According to reports, over 8 000 nurses are jobless, while some of the rural clinics are run by nurse aids.
