HARARE Mayor, Jacob Mafume, says for all its challenges, the capital remains the go-to city of choice in Zimbabwe and it should be a home which enables its residents to pursue their dreams, live in peace and work in hope.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration between the Government and the private sector when he launched Chenesa Harare Phase 3 at Tichagarika Shopping Centre in Glen View yesterday.
This follows widespread criticism of Harare’s failure to provide essential services such as water, transport, waste management and energy.
Despite these challenges, Mafume remains optimistic.
“Harare is the go-to city for most people in Zimbabwe. We must make it not only a destination of choice, but also a place where people can achieve their dreams, live in peace, and work in hope.
“As a country, we believe that there is a certain level of standards that we should maintain, we might differ in a lot of things, but no one wants to stay in a dirty smelly place.
“The City Council is going to be working hand-in-hand with the government for the betterment of the country.”
Mafume hailed the Government for the Launch of Chenesa Harare Phase 3 for helping to make his job easier.
The Mayor said it was important that the capital provides first-class service delivery for its residents.
“We are a resilient and resourceful nation, we are going to be working together with the government and the community to create a safe environment for all people.
“Our sewer network needs to be worked on, we are looking at rolling out a plan and works.
“So, we need to be able to rehabilitate and expand our sewer works, remember this city was designed for about five hundred thousand people.
“It’s now close to 3 million people staying within Harare and the sewer networks for all these areas have not been upgraded significantly to match the growth in population and also coupled with that is the availability of water.”
