Former Home Affairs permanent secretary Dr Job Whabira, who died on March 21, has been granted a State-assisted burial.
Dr Whabira died at Samuel Leone Hospital in Harare and is expected to be buried at Warren Hills Cemetery tomorrow.
Family spokesperson Mr Glen Whabira, son to the late, told The Herald last night that burial had been set for 1pm.
“Dr Whabira has been awarded State-assisted burial by the Government of Zimbabwe. He will be buried on Sunday at Warren Hills at 1pm.
“He distinguished himself as permanent secretary for Home Affairs and as permanent secretary for the Ministry of Defence.
“Dr Whabira also distinguished himself as chairman for the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and our wish as a family was for him to be declared a national hero given his good works. We have lost a hero who was dedicated to work for his family and country,” said Mr Whabira.
A letter seen by The Herald indicates that the family had written to the Government requesting national hero status.
Current ZACC chairperson Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo yesterday said Dr Whabira was appointed ZACC chairperson in February 2016, a position he held until his resignation in January 2019.
“He executed his duties diligently in fighting corruption in Zimbabwe,” she said.
Justice Matanda-Moyo is the one who replaced Dr Whabira when he resigned.
He was born on February 21, 1939.
He is survived by his wife Mrs Florence Japajapa Whabira and five children.
Mourners are gathered at Plot 3, Fontainebleau, Tynwald, Harare.
