Plan Infrastructure Development (PID) — the consultant and developer of the Sakubva Urban Renewal Project — says the project is oversubscribed and they will hit the ground running next month.
The project is expected to modernise Mutare’s oldest and run-down suburb of Sakubva turning the Manicaland provincial capital into a Smart City in line with Government’s Vision 2030.
The Sakubva Urban Renewal Project was commissioned by President Mnangagwa on Wednesday in Mutare.
In an interview yesterday, PID’s architect and infrastructure planner Mr Hillary Mukaratirwa said they were ready to roll.
“We are ready to go and we will be rolling the project in January now that it has been officially commissioned. The project is over-subscribed. Pension funds, insurance companies and even individuals also want the apartments,” he said.
The project will see the demolition of the old Sakubva houses and the construction of modern high-rise apartments.
Mr Murakatirwa explained the nature of the project. “We (PID) are the developers. This is a public private partnership arrangement. The City of Mutare is providing land and BancABC the finance. PID developed the project concept and are the designers, engineers and developers,” he said.
In a separate interview, Mutare City Council spokesperson Mr Spren Mutiwi said Sakubva residents would be taken care of as they were natural partners in the renewal project.
The project will also see the revamping of Sakubva flea market, the Sakubva long distance bus terminus, Sakubva stadium, Sakubva Beit Hall and Sakubva vegetable market.
The Sakubva stadium is in a sorry state. It has since been abandoned by Premier Soccer League Football team Manica Diamonds.
