Lovemore Zigara in Gweru
WHAWHA fired the first warning shots on the opening day of the 2018 Zimbabwe General Medical Aid Fund Central Soccer League (ZGMAF-CSL) by walloping Blanket Mine 4-0 in Gwanda at the weekend.
Liberty Dube’s brace and a goal apiece by Albert Matewu and Paddington Maburutse ensured victory for the former Premiership side to top the league table.
It was also sweet revenge for the Gweru side following Blanket Mine’s double over them last season. Whawha lost 0-1 on the opening day of the 2017 season at Whawha Grounds and went down 1-2 on the last day of the season.
Whawha coach, Luke Petros-Jukulile, was humble in glory and said they were focusing on the long term.
“It is too early to tell, but we are happy with the victory. We just want to take each match as it comes and focus on the long race and see what happens,” said Petros-Jukulile.
Elsewhere, Midlands State University (MSU) also got off the mark with a 1-0 win over Ivan Hoe at Mkoba Stadium, courtesy of a Nyasha Simenti strike in the 85th minute.
MSU coach, Joseph Michael, was elated with the win and declared that the next five games would determine the varsity side’s destiny this season.
A five-goal thriller was in the offing at Wilson Fields on Sunday, as league debutants FC Lesaffre edged ZPC Munyati, while the biggest upset of the weekend was the 1-0 defeat of “expensively” assembled Sheasham by Chrome Stars in Kwekwe.
With nine of the 13 participating teams fancying their chances of being promoted, it promises to be another exciting season in the ZGMAF-CSL just like last season when the promotional race went to the wire.
