Wheat farmers have so far harvested about 33 809 tonnes from 6 000 hectares as preparations for summer season crops move a gear up.
The harvest translates to an average yield of 5,5 tonne per hectare. Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services acting chief director, Mr Leonard Munamati said harvesting is progressing according to plan adding that farmers with large hectarage have been linked to organisations with combine harvesters.

“Farmers are encouraged to test moisture before harvesting so that when they harvest at the correct recommended moisture level of 12,5 percent they can deliver immediately and directly to GMB or their contractors,” he said.

“Those who harvest when moisture content is still a bit high can make use of driers some of which are at GMB depots.”

Farmers are also encouraged to continue guarding against veld fires by constructing standard fireguards around their fields as well as watch out for quelea birds and report such for immediate action.
