Tafadzwa Zimoyo : Fashion Talk 263
Hello September, hello actual spring!!! Since we in the season of summer fashion spring, a lot has been happening in and outside the country. For a start, back home many fashion shows and workshops to equip fashion bugs have been taking place.I hear today there are two fashion events which are, “The Edge” and some graduation ceremony for designers taking place in Harare. Sometimes we tend to blame ourselves that we are not fully supported yet we congest ourselves with these events.
Spring season has arrived, yes but in Zimbabwe we view it as summer.
Remember it is all about the colours.
I am happy to say that I managed to have a chit-chat with one of the internationally acclaimed designer Rahima Mohammed who is in the country.
Mohammed who is the founder of Raah designs said a lot needs to be done when it comes to Zimbabwe fashion industry and branding is very important.
I won’t spend much on that because it’s for another article, but for now let’s see what has been topical on the fashion arena.
I couldn’t help it but when I attacked the fashion bugs at previous awards in Zimbabwe. I became enemy to some, little did they know that the critic was meant to change them not destroy them.
So last Sunday was the MTV Video Musical Awards and opps, they also have a fair share when it comes to fashion wardrobe dessert or disaster.
It turns out too that not everyone including celebrities knows how to dress well.
There are so many looks from past MTV Video Music Awards that have made fashion history, with each year continuing to surprise not the guest only but the media too.
Who can forget Britney Spears’s albino snake, Lil’ Kim’s purple pastie, Gwen Stefani’s furry blue bikini top, or every single one of Miley Cyrus’ outfits during 2015’s ceremony?
For 2016, there are certainly a lot of contenders to add to that list as well.
While some looks slayed the white carpet, others were more appropriate for another occasion. Maybe it was getting ready for Halloween?
From plenty of blazers sans shirts to tonnes of sheer detailing, the stars stepped out in some funky fashions.
First up is Kim Kardashian West in what could be the latest trend, a half-off-the-shoulder look!
The wife to Kanye West tried her hand at this new style in a semi-sheer ruched mini-dress with tie detailing.
The reality star rocked it off her right shoulder and paired it with a strappy heels for an offbeat yet on-point look.
And the hair?
Okay, will that fresh-out-of-the-shower look be the latest craze?
West may have started two trends with her 2016 VMAs look.
She nailed it, I must say.
Poison singer Rita Ora, rocked a disastrous combination at the awards show as her sheer Marc Jacobs gown featured red and black fringe detailing, but the weirdest part of the get-up was that leather- and fur-adorned jacket.
Queen of the show Beyonce not only scooped many awards but again arrived on the red carpet looking regal in this elegant and bold Francesco Scognamiglio gown.
Though it drew comparisons on Twitter to everything from the Muppets character Sam the Eagle to Niagara Falls, the gown’s dramatic wings are something only Beyonce could pull off flawlessly.
Beyonce’s flawless up do let those wings shine on the white carpet but her amazing earrings give the dramatic neckline of the dress a run for its money.
Again Queen B’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter did it only right as she wore a gown fit for a princess.
Blue Ivy arrived with mom Beyonce in gold tutu dress and sneakers, complete with a tiara.
Perfection, she slayed.
Our disaster list include the outlandish style from Jaden Smith, Holland Roden and Baddie Winkle among others.
Jaden rocked a layered look over black jeans, but upon closer inspection of the bottom panels of his jacket, there were some emblazoned kittens.
But kittens?
We didn’t expect that Jaden although we sort of love it, try get a better look.
The joke of the night was Baddie Winkle looked like a queen while channeling the real queen of the VMAs, the one and only Britney Spears.
The social media phenomenon rocked a sheer and bedazzled jumpsuit much like Britney’s 2000 MTV VMAs performance ensemble and somehow she rocked it well.
Man of the moment when it comes to style, Sean “Diddy” Combs shocked everyone as he rocked on-trend velvet shoes, finishing off his all-black look.
He also wore a cape-like flaps hanging off his sleeves.
We’re all for trying something different when it comes to menswear, but this attempt is a miss.
Capes had a moment a few years back, but we are really ready to retire that trend.
Anyway with such season, windy and hot make sure you have the appropriate dress sense and accessories.
Always carry a hat and sunglasses during this period.
If you are a fashion bug make sure to show off the labels.
Till next week, happy fashion week.
