A new Mutoko-based Chimurenga group Mutoko Chimurenga Choir has joined forces with gospel musician Gilbert Noel Kanokanga to release an album entitled “Chipo Chenyika”. The six-track album is one with a difference as it fuses messages of unity and national pride with gospel music. “This is the first album from me and the group that has been in existence for the last few months. I composed all the songs on the album and, with the help of traditional instruments and the group’s backing vocals, we were able to come up with beautiful music,” said Chitungwiza-based Kanokanga.
The artiste, who has been in the music business since 1994, has provided backing vocals for iconic musicians like the late James Chimombe and Thomas Mapfumo.
The current album becomes his eighth project as he has vowed to continue with the chimurenga/gospel route with the 10-member ensemble.
Speaking on the outfit, the group’s manager, Cyprian Kufa, said he was optimistic of success as they were bringing a new vibe.
“We are not here to compete with any other choir but simply complement what is already there.
“Besides, we bring to the plate our own style that is different from what is already on the market.
“However, our aim is to celebrate our nation and the contributions of President Robert Mugabe,” he said.
