THIS summer hair is all about easy styles, because fussing with complicated looks in hot temperatures is the last thing you would want to do.
This season’s hair trends are equally as diverse as the clothing trends that came off the runway.
The ponytail continues to be a favourite and is an absolute saviour in the case of a bad hair day.
This sleek, chic look is the statement look of the season and really opens up your face and features.
Wear it with a side or middle parting or pulled back, and whether you go for a sophisticated high look or a more relaxed low pony, the look is versatile.
When the heat goes up, hair comes down, and long lengths continue to be a favourite this summer.
Vimbai Mahiya, the Zimbabwean operations manager of the Azara range of high-grade, Remy hairpieces recommends their straight piece for a sleek lengthy look.
Curls are also great fun for a big, bold summer look. For a soft, pretty curl, Vimbai suggests the Deep Wave piece, and for a tighter curl, the Body Wave hairpiece.
We are also seeing the comeback of accessories with cute, lady-like bows, scarves tied around hair to give for a breath-taking look and turbans that add all-out glamour.
The hairdresser that I have entrusted with my hair for years, Moyra Gutsa, creates show-stopping styles with a mix of creativity and knowledge of what works well with different hair types.
I asked for her insight on what styles are trending in Harare.
“The in-style is called the “Rihanna” or “Keri Hilson” and is created by cutting one side short and bonding a weave on the other side that can be tonged down or up.”
For this style Moyra recommends Bump or Ruby Wrap weaves. Beyonce’s new sleek bob is also making waves.
Moyra says: “To achieve this style, one side of the hair is made slightly longer that the other. Since Queen B is now rocking this look, it will be hot this summer.”
Colour is also a fun feature in summer hair. When I perused through the selection of Harare’s most popular hair emporium, Hair World, I could not help but notice the blonde and candy coloured extensions that screamed Nick Minaj.
Of course, we can not all go out like the ultimate Barbie herself, but streaks of blue, green or purple can be fun in hair, just as long as you do not go overboard, and blonde is wearable if you are careful with choosing a shade that suits your skin tone.
For a tamer take on colour, deep black and rich brown are sophisticated, and a dip-dye (where the ends are dyed a lighter colour) is super trendy.
The great thing is that all these styles work well on natural hair too, so you can give yourself a break from extensions and chemicals.
Short styles are in, and I have noticed them cropping up everywhere, since I myself decided to make the cut. Another great style for the natural hair is braids and plaits, which can go as big and bold as you dare for a regal summer look.
