The greatest tragedy is not death, but a life without purpose. And many students are showing no sign of purpose due to a lack of wisdom.
From day one, along the journey of education, wisdom plays a vital role in shaping the decisions and the future of students.
Sadly in the absence of this crucial quality, dire consequences have been witnessed as young people make their way into the real life of college.
The lack of wisdom often manifests in poor choices, reckless behaviour and an inability to foresee the long-term effects of their actions.
Fellow students, wisdom is more than just knowledge, as it involves the ability to apply that knowledge thoughtfully and judiciously.
It’s real that students often face pressures, academic, social and emotional that can cloud their judgment, but without the guidance of wisdom, most of us are making impulsive decisions, from academic dishonesty to substance abuse, that are dashing our future.
This week I am after some students who are perishing due to a lack of wisdom, which should keep us safe from the demons of college. The consequences of choosing ignorance extend beyond academics.
Many students struggle to develop critical life skills, such as problem-solving, decision-making and effective communication.
These skills are essential not just for academic success but getting through adult life. When students avoid gaining knowledge and wisdom, they risk becoming ill-prepared for the challenges they will face in their careers and personal relationships.
In most cases, when students lack wisdom, they find themselves in precarious situations.
Last week, I attended a function with several students and the topical issues were about fighting the menace of drugs among students.
Despite other issues such as promiscuity, that were also raised, the drug issue was the major discussion point and it caught my attention since statistics indicate that most students are dying and some are dropping out of college due to drug and substance abuse. Like I always say, college life has many short-term pleasures over long-term goals.
Some of these cases include skipping classes, neglecting studies or engaging in risky behaviours, all of which has culminated in failure or worse.
The lack of wisdom among students is leading to choices that are endangering most students’ education, health and futures.
It is crucial to provide an environment where critical thinking, self-reflection and responsible decision-making should be considered.
By nurturing wisdom, students can follow their paths more effectively, ensuring that they thrive rather than succumb to the pitfalls of ignorance.
In the ever-evolving landscape of education, wisdom is an essential compass for students steering the circumstances of their academic and personal lives.
Unfortunately, many students find themselves lacking this crucial quality, leading to poor decision-making that is derailing their academic pursuits and future prospects.
The absence of wisdom often translates into impulsive choices, particularly regarding substance use, which has now brought catastrophic consequences.
Students face a plethora of pressures from academic expectations to social dynamics that usually cloud their judgment.
Without the wisdom to evaluate their choices critically, many are falling into the trap of making decisions based on immediate gratification.
Parents have even lost hope in their college children due to their poor choices and lack of wisdom.
One of the most dangerous choices students might make is experimenting with drugs.
Mostly, the appeal may be rooted in curiosity, peer pressure or a misguided desire to cope with stress.
However, the lack of foresight among some students is leading to a downward spiral.
Some students still believe that they can control their usage, yet this often leads to addiction, drastically affecting their academic performance and personal lives.
When students choose drugs over their studies, they risk losing sight of their academic goals. Substance abuse impairs cognitive functions, leading to decreased concentration, poor grades, and ultimately, failure to graduate.
The initial excitement of drug use quickly turns into a cycle of dependency that overshadows all other aspects of their lives.
Students are finding themselves facing academic probation, expulsion, or even legal issues related to drug use.
Their relationships with family and friends are deteriorating, and the dreams they once held are slipping away, replaced by the harsh reality of addiction.
Fellow students, the greatest mistake is to do nothing because you can only do a little.
Students need to be empowered with wisdom for them to make informed choices.
In recent years, the alarming rise in drug abuse among students has become a pressing concern.
Many young individuals, including students are perishing not only from the physical effects of drugs but also from the lack of knowledge about the dangers associated with substance abuse.
The seductive allure of drugs, coupled with insufficient education on their consequences, has left many students vulnerable and unprepared.
Many students enter college or high school with little understanding of how easily substance abuse can spiral into addiction.
The absence of comprehensive drug education programmes often means that students are not equipped to make informed choices.
As a result, they may underestimate the risks associated with recreational drug use, believing they can control their consumption.
Tragically, this lack of awareness can lead to devastating outcomes, including overdose and death.
Self-responsibility is crucial the moment one enters the campus.
Students should recognise that their choices directly impact their health and future.
Without this awareness, many fall into the trap of substance dependence.
As the saying goes, ignorance is no bliss, but a death sentence.
This stark reality highlights the need for students to take ownership of their decisions and understand the long-term consequences of drug use.
Until we meet for a toast, say no to drugs
