PROPERTY worth over $20 000 was destroyed recently at Chinyudze Secondary School in Headlands by a gusty whirlwind.
The disaster has now left the school authorities in distress following the opening of schools on Tuesday.
The whirlwind that struck in the afternoon on December 9 ripped off the roof of the entire Form One classroom block and destroyed furniture and windows at the school.
The school head, Mr Noah Mushanawani, said they were in distress as they do not have the financial resources to immediately fix the damages to ensure the safety of the students in the classrooms.
“The classrooms are not safe especially when it rains, some remaining structures fall off from the roof and we fear for the safety of the children. We do not have anywhere else to temporarily house the students and we have since communicated the urgency of our concern with our parent ministry (Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education) and to the School Development Committee,” said Mr Mushanawani.
He said the block had two classrooms which housed 33 students each. Mr Mushanawani added that in 2010 a similar whirlwind destroyed their agriculture block and it took them over a year to mobilise funds to repair it.
