WHITE CITY STADIUM in Bulawayo is the focal point of Zimbabwean athletics today, as it plays host to the fiercely contested Inter-Provincial Athletics Championships. Under the moniker “The Battle of the 10 Provinces,” the event is geared to deliver a thrilling spectacle, highlighting the determination and prowess of the nation’s best athletes.

Athletes will be competing not only for provincial glory but also for coveted spots at the upcoming Southern Region Senior Championships in Harare, scheduled for 26–27 July.

Final preparations have been completed, with organisers confirming that all is in place for a smooth and successful event.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) competitions director Manuel Mpofu expressed both enthusiasm and confidence ahead of the championships, confirming that it’s all systems go.

“Everything is set, and we are fully prepared to welcome all 10 provinces to White City. The response from officials, volunteers, and the local community has been exceptional. We’ve ensured that all logistical aspects — from transport to scheduling and accommodation — are well coordinated, so athletes and coaches can focus purely on performance.”

Mpofu also emphasised the broader vision behind the championships.

“This event is more than just a competition; it is a cornerstone of our national athletics development. The Inter-Provincials provide a vital platform to identify emerging talent and strengthen our national squads. We are confident that today’s performances will reflect the progress we are making in building a stronger, more competitive athletics system in Zimbabwe.”

Defending champions Harare Province will be aiming to retain their title, but they face strong challenges from Bulawayo, Midlands, Manicaland, and Masvingo, all of whom have shown impressive form in recent warm-up meets.

The host city, Bulawayo, is especially eager to make a strong impression on home turf, with provincial pride and a sense of responsibility fuelling their athletes’ ambitions.

Adding star power to the championships are Zimbabwe’s recent World Relay representatives — Denis Hove, Adrian Tafa, Leeford Zuze, and Gareth Muwishi — whose presence is expected to inspire young athletes and significantly raise the level of competition.

To ensure accuracy and fairness, an electronic timing system will be used throughout the championships, guaranteeing precise and reliable results across all events.
