THE White House doesn’t expect to follow the United Kingdom in raising the terror threat level in light of risks posed by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, press secretary Josh Earnest said yesterday.“I don’t anticipate, at this point, that there’s a plan to change that level,” Earnest said during his daily news briefing.
“There’s no evidence or indication right now that ISIL is actively planning or plotting to attack the United States,” he later added.
Earnest’s comments came after the UK raised its terror threat level to “severe” yesterday. He also noted that there are more UK passport holders fighting with ISIL than there are American passport holders believed to be part of the group.
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said that his department and the FBI “are unaware of any specific, credible threat to the US homeland from ISIL.”
“Plainly, however, violent extremists who support ISIL have demonstrated the intent and capability to target American citizens overseas, and ISIL constitutes an active and serious threat within the region,” Johnson added.
British Prime Minister David Cameron isn’t taking any chances. “What we’re facing in Iraq now with ISIL is a deeper and greater threat to our security than we have known before,” he said yesterday. — Politico.
