national team as it prepares for its return to Test cricket.
Current skipper Elton Chigumbura has re-iterated that he wants to continue in his role as skipper.
While Chigumbura remains in the picture, other names have been thrown around and include opening batsman Brendan Taylor and Vusi Sibanda.
Tatenda Taibu indicated that he was not interested in the captaincy and would rather concentrate on his batting.
So, after a lot of debate on the subject, it’s now clear that one of the three men – Chigumbura, Taylor and Sibanda – will be endorsed as captain of the national team.
There have been suggestions for Zimbabwe to appoint different captains for Test, ODIs and Twenty20 but it’s now likely that one captain would be endorsed for all forms of the game.
Zimbabwe’s players intensified their jostling for places in the national team ahead of next week’s tri-nations series to feature South Africa and Australia ‘A’ sides.
The squad of 32, which was called in camp last month, has been split into two teams that are currently playing a four-day game at Harare Sports Club.
Assistant coach Stephen Mangongo yesterday said they have seen great fighting spirit as players battle for places with only 15 available for the team.
The selectors are expected to announce the final squad at the weekend or early next week after a month of preparations.
“These guys have been pushing hard and the more they feel the pressure from the new players the higher they feel the need to raise their game.
“Everyone knows that you have to be on top of your game to be selected.
“It’s not about the names and this is the challenge that most of the players have been facing in the last six weeks.
“Each player has to prove himself,” said Mangongo.
Top order batsman Regis Chakabva had the highest score in the four-day practice game currently underway at the Harare Sports Club after hitting 115 on Monday.
“It’s very encouraging because these guys batted until after lunch and they posted a good score over 340 runs.
“I think the technical issues are getting cleaner and better and we hope for more improvements,” said Mangongo.
Hamilton Masakadza, who is set to make a return after missing the World Cup, also powered to an unbeaten century in a two-day practice game last week while Taylor had 83 runs in the same match. Mangongo said they have witnessed significant improvement with the pace bowling, which has been the team’s major undoing.
Among the new players included in the squad, Southern Rocks’ left arm bowler Brian Vitori has acquitted himself well with the ball.
“He has shown great promise and is doing quite well with the new ball,” said Mangongo.
Zimbabwe is hoping to resume playing Test matches in August when Bangladesh come to town.
But they will prepare for that with the series which begins next Wednesday and ends on July 8.
The series will be followed by two four-day matches against Australia A between July 15 and July 24.
Meanwhile former South Africa assistant coach Vincent Barnes has been appointed as High Performance coach of Cricket South Africa and his immediate task is to work with the side that tours Zimbabwe next week.
South Africa A are expected to take on hosts Zimbabwe XI and Australia A in a tri-series tournament at Harare Sports Club next week and Barnes believes this is an opportunity for him to grow.
“This new position will not only give me the opportunity to re-establish myself as a head coach, but to also use my eight years of international experience to help develop up and coming players,” said Barnes.
Barnes will team up with former Proteas coach Corrie Van Zyl in the running and implementation of CSA’s High Performance programmes and will also coach the Emerging Players’ squad to tour Australia later this year.
