THE Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) goes to the polls today to elect new office bearers with Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa, who is vying for the presidency promising a united and well oiled football block that will focus on pursuing sponsorship deals for football development.
Chiyangwa will battle for the post with two other heavyweights, incumbent Suketu Patel, who has been in the seat for a record 11 years and the South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan
“I want to build a united, well oiled football block whose focus shall be pursuing sponsorship deals to allow football development in the region. This will see more teams from the Cosafa member countries qualifying for major international tournaments. I will also pursue equal opportunities for all members and increase participation of Cosafa at both Caf and Fifa,” said Chiyangwa in an interview from South Africa yesterday.
The flamboyant Harare property mogul also threw his hat for the vice presidency post that has two other candidates, Lesotho’s Salemane Phafane and Frans Mbidi from Namibia.
The elections will be held in South Africa in the North West Province which hosted the 2016 Cosafa Under-20 Championships that ended yesterday.
Despite its growing popularity, Cosafa championships, especially the senior one, is still not recognised by Fifa, a challenge to the incoming leadership.
