RUNNERS are warming up for a fast finish on December 21 as the Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run marks its 10th anniversary with one of the race’s biggest cash offerings. The field is expected to be packed and ambitious. The organisers have put serious money on the table, and the milestone has already stirred excitement across Bulawayo’s athletics circles.
The men’s and women’s winners will each walk away with R3 500. Junior runners will chase R1 250, R800 and R600 for the top three places. The wheelchair racers will fight for R1 500 and R1 000. It is a strong incentive package that has pushed the race into sharper focus as the countdown begins.
This year comes with a new look. The event shifts from the city centre to Nkulumane Shopping Complex, a move expected to bring fresh energy and a new community into the fold. Registration has opened at the Liquor Hub shop between 4th and 5th Avenue. Seniors pay US$5 and juniors pay US$3.
Bulawayo Athletics Board chairperson Watson Madenyika said the combination of increased prizes and a new venue has lifted the mood among athletes. “The 10th anniversary has created a lot of excitement. The prizes are attractive, and we are expecting a highly competitive field. This event has grown each year, and this edition promises to be the biggest yet,” he said.
Elite runners have long treated this race as a must. Previous editions have featured names like Moses Tarakinyu, Jonathan Chinyoka, Trust Chidomaya and Olivia Chitate. Last year’s contest was tight. Wayne Kabondo won the men’s title in 29 minutes 32 seconds ahead of Munyaradzi Zizhou by two seconds. Martin Mutsapa placed third in 30:03. In the women’s race, Caroline Mhandu took control of the field with a 36:06 finish. Ethel Pangiso and Tulange Mudenda completed the podium.
Liquor Hub continues to position the event as more than a race. The organisers channel proceeds to groups that care for Bulawayo’s elderly. That charitable drive reflects the commitment of Liquor Hub proprietor and Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Raj Modi, who has supported various causes over the years, including helping children access life saving heart surgery abroad.
