‘WHY ALWAYS US?. . . ChiTown residents raise another sewage red flag

CHITUNGWIZA residents are once again up in arms over council’s failure to fix burst sewer pipes that are now discharging raw sewage, posing a health hazard.

Some residents claim that unscrupulous municipal workers are demanding an extra US$2 fee to repair the pipes.

The sewage is flowing into wells, posing the risk of diarrhoea and other health hazards.

A resident, Tsitsi Mashiri, said it was unacceptable for council to neglect service delivery and then charge residents to repair its decaying infrastructure.

“This is unacceptable. Why should we pay these workers US$2 each for them to fix burst sewer pipes when we pay rates,” she said.

Another resident, Amos Sunduza, said they were worried by the extent of neglect by the municipality.

“This is a health time bomb, which can explode any time. Our council has not been proactive on this issue.

“People should not drink water from wells because the sewage is flowing into the wells. We heard that a family had diarrhoea due to burst sewers.”

Chitungwiza municipality spokesperson, Lovemore Meya, stated that they were working on a resolution to the problem.

He encouraged residents to contact the council if similar issues occur.

“We have taken note of the concerns and are currently seized with them,” said                  Meya.
