Why Kenyan Fans Are Moving to Mobile Apps and What That’s Changing About Watching Sports in 2026

May 2026 is a busy month for the Kenyan sports fan. Our runners brought home 17 medals from the African Championships. Boxer George Onyango won the East and Central Africa super welterweight title. Gor Mahia keep grinding out results in the FKF Premier League, while the women’s rugby team is getting ready to host the Africa Cup.

There are different ways to watch all of this. Some people sit in front of the TV. Others turn on the radio. But the numbers tell a different story – 96 out of every 100 bets in Kenya are now placed from a phone. You can watch and bet at the same time. If you haven’t tried it yet, there’s no better moment. There are events everywhere. The odds are interesting. An online betting app puts every May and June tournament right in one place. Let’s take a look at what’s behind those numbers and how apps are changing fan habits.

More Than Just a Bet – a Different Way to Watch Sport

Take the Mozzart Bet Cup final. On 14 June, Tusker and Kenya Police will meet at Nyayo Stadium. You can just sit and wait for someone to score. Or you can open an online betting app on your phone a minute before kick-off, check the line-ups, spot that the main attacker is carrying an injury, and adjust your prediction.

Not long ago, betting worked like this: you walked into a betting shop, filled out a slip, and waited. It’s different now. You’re watching the match. You see a team start to crumble in the second half. You open the app. You place a bet on under total goals. Twenty seconds, start to finish.

That’s the real shift. The app turns passive viewing into active involvement. You’re not just a spectator. You’re inside the game.

Numbers That Explain a Lot

Mobile betting in Kenya has grown several times over in the last two years. Here are a few figures:

  • 96.51% of bets are placed through mobile devices.
  • More than 90% of Kenyan adults have an M-Pesa account.
  • 79% of surveyed players take part in betting regularly.
  • Africa’s sports betting market was worth $3.08 billion in 2025.
  • The Kenyan market generated more than Sh31 billion in tax revenue over the 2024–2025 period.

Why did this happen? Three simple factors. One – smartphones are everywhere now. Two – M-Pesa solved the payment problem. Three – apps learned how to run fast even on a weak connection.

What’s Happening on the Field Right Now

May has been packed. Here are the main events Kenyans have been betting on – and are still betting on.

  • Athletics. In Accra, our team won 17 medals: 6 gold, 4 silver, 7 bronze. Diana Wanza took the women’s 10,000 m. Julius Yego threw the javelin 79.87 m to win gold. When a Kenyan steps up to the start line, everyone knows – that’s the favourite.
  • Boxing. George Onyango beat Benjamin Mchunguzi by unanimous decision at “Nightmare in Nairobi IV”. The judges scored it 98-92, 99-91, 100-90. Onyango is now the East and Central Africa super welterweight champion. Next target – an IBO belt.
  • Rugby. The women’s Africa Cup runs from 21 to 31 May at the RFUEA Grounds. Kenya Lionesses will face South Africa, Uganda, and Madagascar. Twice our girls have come within touching distance of gold. Now the tournament is at home. A real shot at history.
  • Football. Gor Mahia beat Murang’a Seal 3-1 and stayed on top. AFC Leopards are right behind. The title race is heading for a tight finish. In June, the Harambee Stars will play friendlies against Kyrgyzstan and Palestine as they prepare for AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

How to Pick an App Without Getting Lost

There are plenty of apps out there. Some work fast. Others lag. Some offer bonuses but forget about withdrawals. Here’s what I pay attention to first.

  • Speed. The app should open in a couple of seconds. Not on the tenth attempt. Not after a restart. Fast means it’s been built properly.
  • Payments. The Kenyan standard is M-Pesa. The minimum deposit is usually around 50 shillings. Money should appear instantly. Withdrawals too. If an app asks you to wait three days, something’s off.
  • Live betting. This is the best part. You’re watching football – you see the tempo drop – you bet on under goals. You’re watching boxing – you see a fighter wobble – you bet on an early finish. Without live betting, an app is only half the story.
  • Stats. A good app doesn’t just show odds; it shows numbers. Who scored how many. Who covered how much ground. Head-to-head records. That helps you think instead of guess.
  • Responsible gambling. This matters. A proper app has deposit limits, a time-out option, a self-exclusion button. If none of that is there, it’s worth asking who you’re trusting with your money.

A reliable online betting app doesn’t just let you place a bet – it gives you the full picture of a live sports event.

June – New Events, New Bets

The June calendar is even busier.

From 3 to 6 June, the Harambee Stars play friendly matches. The opponents are Kyrgyzstan and Palestine. It’s all part of the build-up to AFCON 2027 qualifiers. Odds are already showing up in the apps.

14 June – the Mozzart Bet Cup final between Tusker and Kenya Police. The club match of the year.

From 17 to 20 June, Nairobi hosts the Davis Cup Africa Group IV tennis tournament. It’s the first time Kenya has held this event since 2019.

So if you thought Kenyan sport begins and ends with football – think again. It’s only just getting started.
