Why Maswanhise can be priced-away

Zimbabwe international Tawanda Maswanhise could attract a big price if he is to move away from Motherwell after his impressive start to the 2025/26 season.

His brace against Kilmarnock on Saturday ensured he is now on double figures this season, 11 goals in all competitions. The winger is set to be among the most wanted forwards during the January transfer window in Europe or the summer.

But with reports that Leicester has a buyback clause on the Zimbabwean, any interested club in Scottland or Europe will have to make a massive bid. The buyback clause terms are undisclosed.

Chances are high that if Maswanhise is to be sold to another club in Europe, he could set a new club record fee, surpassing that of Lennon Miller. Udinese paid an initial £4.7 million (US$6.1 million), plus add-ons, in August 2025 for Miller to the Scottish club.

Despite Maswanhise’s scoring rate and club form has made a mockery of the US$500 000 value that he has according to transfermarkt.com.

The idea of a January or Summer sell is not farfetched given Motherwell history of developing young players and selling them for a profit.

In 2020, they also sold to Scottish giants Celtic their valued asset David Turnbull for £3.25 million (US$4.25 million), a club record that stood until Miller sale to Serie A. As things stand, it cannot also be ruled out that Maswanhise could find his way back to King Power Stadium, with Leicester also having a say.

The player spent 12 years in the junior structures at Leicester City before being sold to Motherwell where he has shown he is ready for the big stage — a real fox in the box. After relegation last season from the Premier League, Leicester are currently mid-table in the champion-ship with 24 points, trailing log leaders Coventry by 13 points.

They have won six games, drawn six and lost four. Their target for now could be second position for automatic promotion or a play-off position which is still within reach.

They could actually do with Maswanhise back there.

On Saturday, the Zimbabwean was at his usual best as Motherwell ended a five-year wait for a win at Rugby Park, beating Kilmarnock 3-1.

They took the lead after 16 minutes, Emmanuel Longelo finding space down the left and curling the ball to the back post which evaded Dom Thompson and found Maswanhise. He made no mistake for his 10th of the season.

In the 26th minute, Maswanhise came back to haunt the hosts again. Kilmarnock got off to a good start in the second half when Scott Tiffoney slotted past Motherwell to reduce the arrears.

However, substitute Apostolos Stamatelopoulos scored from the penalty spot to make sure Motherwell collected full points. “We needed the three points . . . Good confidence to take to Tuesday as well,” said Maswanhise after the game. “Massive, we knew what we needed to do here.”

After Saturday, chances are high that Maswanhise could now reach the 20-goal mark if he finishes the sea-son at the Scottish side. To Maswanhise’s advantage, his performance at the national team level has also been solid, a big case for him to be at the AFCON finals in Morocco in December.
