ZIMBABWE’S oldest and most iconic football club, Highlanders FC, has received a landmark sponsorship worth US$1 million from prominent businessman and philanthropist Wicknell Chivhayo.
The donation, made in honour of the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, is set to provide critical support to the club ahead of the 2025 Premier Soccer League season.
An initial US$250,000 in cash has already been pledged, earmarked for player welfare, administrative expenses, and the acquisition of new talent. The sponsorship is part of a comprehensive funding package to be disbursed over the coming year.
Chivhayo, a lifelong admirer of Highlanders FC, shared that his contribution is deeply personal and tied to a final emotional conversation with his late uncle, VP Nkomo, in December 2012. During that visit to St Anne’s Hospital,
Nkomo made three heartfelt requests: unwavering support for the ruling party ZANU PF, continued backing of his family Trust, and dedicated support for Highlanders FC to preserve its historic and cultural legacy.
“Highlanders is more than a football club—it is a living symbol of heritage, unity, and pride for the people of Bulawayo and Zimbabwe at large,” said Chivhayo. “This is about honouring my uncle’s wishes and giving back to a community and a club that have shaped our national identity.”
