A couple from Mutare appeared before Chief Mutasa’s community court after a man accused his wife of repeatedly assaulting him during their three-year marriage.
Lloyd Samanyanga told the traditional court that he has been living in fear of his wife, Dorcas Dzvairo, whom he accused of physically abusing him since 2023, shortly after they got married.
He alleged that Dzvairo frequently beat him with a wooden cooking stick, acted on rumours, abused alcohol and assaulted him during disputes over family finances, leaving him with injuries and scars.
Samanyanga said both families had unsuccessfully tried to resolve the matter, while a faith healer had also intervened. He added that he once reported the alleged assaults to the police but later withdrew the case in an effort to save the marriage.
However, Dzvairo denied the allegations, claiming that her husband and his family were trying to tarnish her reputation.
She argued that the couple’s marital problems stemmed from Samanyanga’s failure to provide adequate financial support for the family.
After hearing both sides, Chief Mutasa condemned all forms of domestic violence and urged the couple and their families to work together to resolve their differences amicably.
He also advised Samanyanga that if he was assaulted, he should report the matter to the police so that it could be dealt with through the proper legal process.
