Wife assaulted over $20 water bill

A WOMAN from Gweru’s Mkoba 19 suburb recently got a thorough hiding from her husband after she asked for $20 to pay the water bill.
The husband, Kudzai Mhondiwa, 32, of 5559 Mkoba 19, pleaded guilty to domestic violence when he was arraigned before Gweru magistrate Judith Taruvinga. He escaped with a $100 fine but could spend 30 days in prison if he fails to pay it.

“The offence of domestic violence is a serious one that the court is committed to punish severely. However, in tempering justice with mercy the court has also considered that this is the accused’s first offence and he did not waste the court’s time by denying the charge and has profusely apologised to his wife since the incident,” said Taruvinga before delivering the sentence.

For the State, Helen Khosa told the court that on May 21, at around 11 PM, Mhondiwa arrived home from the local tavern in a drunken stupor.

His wife, Sisa Tshuma, proceeded to ask for $20 to pay the water bill.
Mhondiwa, who was apparently not in the mood to stomach such issues, went berserk and started slapping his wife.

Tshuma, however, managed to escape and reported the matter to the police, leading to her husband’s arrest.
