A MAN from the northern suburbs of Harare has been sentenced to perform 220 hours of community service after being convicted of assaulting his wife for supposedly staring at other men while they were walking together.
Desmond Nyakakweto (35), a resident of Monovale, was initially sentenced to 20 months in prison by Harare magistrate Mrs Sharon Rakafa on charges of physical abuse.
However, eight months of his sentence were suspended for five years, provided he does not commit a similar offence during that time.
The remaining 12 months were set aside under the condition that he completes community service at Milton Park Police Station.
Nyakakweto was found guilty of assaulting his wife, Ms Getrude Mukumbi, who is a maid in the same neighbourhood.
On March 8, while walking his wife to her workplace, Nyakakweto began accusing her of staring at men they passed.
This led to a heated argument, during which he physically assaulted her.
Upon arriving at her workplace, he violently lifted her and threw her onto the tarmac, causing her to lose consciousness.
She was subsequently taken to a clinic and recovered the following day.
In a separate case, Magistrate Rakafa sentenced Tarisai Lunga (33) to seven months in jail for assaulting her physically challenged mother, Ms Grace Pemba.
The attack occurred on April 6 at their home in Kambuzuma following a misunderstanding.
It marked Tarisai’s second appearance in court for similar charges, hence the jail sentence.
