Well, the answer is simple, fans should expect anything. This is because the group is made up of four key members who share a similar background, but have different influences. Jonas Kasamba, Francis “Slomo” Dhaka, Noel Nyazanda and Obert Gomba were part of Alick Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo.
How they managed to keep it a secret from Macheso for over 10 months remains a mystery. They even rehearsed. Is Macheso that dull that he failed to notice the guys were organising a breakaway group under his nose?
Understandably, Extra Kwazvose will be dropping their first album on July 12, it even boggles the mind how such a new band could record and release an album within just 10 months. Of course, some people say it doesn’t take long to record an album, but what matters is the product.
Remember the late King of Pop Michael Jackson would take at least five years to record an album and admittedly the King of Pop was a talented performer. Comparing Jackson’s talent to Extra Kwazvose would be a world of difference.
Coming closer to home, our revered superstar Oliver Mtukudzi took years to be appreciated, but suddenly came Extra Kwazvose, a group which promises to surpass all the other groups with just their debut album.
Quite honestly, Slomo is one of the most talented dancers to emerge in Zimbabwe, but he is not that good when it comes to vocals. What makes him an entertainer is that he can imitate anyone, but that’s how far his vocal talents takes him.
On his own, Slomo might turn out to be a big yawn.
Kasamba’s claim to fame was when he used to chant at the beginning or at the middle of a song. He also tries hard at dancing, but because he is more of a chanter than a dancer he does not last the course.
Yes, Gomba is a gifted drummer and he has proved himself on a number of occasions especially during the Harare International Festival of the Arts where was part of a group of drummers who showcased their drumming skills.
Other than that, his drumming skills are not extraordinary, but of course since he has been playing sungura beats fans should not expect anything new from him.
Perhaps what fans should expect is the same sungura beat that he used to play while he was still with Macheso.
As for Nyazanda, most fans know him through Kasamba’s chants when he sang: “Nowero, Nowero, Nowero.”
From the outset Extra Kwazvose appears to be more of an ambitious project than anything else.
Its members are out to prove a thing or two, but sadly experimenting with music is highly risky. What guarantee is there that the group is here to stay?
Some have made it with the release of their debut others have taken a lifetime to create names. So which side is Extra Kwazvose on?
