WILL HEIRS TO THE SUNGURA THRONE RISE TO THE OCCASION?

Trust Khosa

SUNGURA is touted as one of the most followed genres in Zimbabwe.

However, there are genuine fears the new crop of sungura artists are not doing enough to match the standards set by their pacesetters.

This will be under the spotlight again at this year’s Independence Music Fiesta set for Buhera on April 18.

It will be held at Murambinda B Primary School, from 6pm to 6am.

Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria is one of the headline acts at the event, along with Suluman Chimbetu.

New school sungura artists will be represented by Mark Ngwazi, Bio Mudimba of the Kujatajata fame, Simon Mutambi and Bigboy Motsi.

Fans want to see someone who can succeed the likes of Alick Macheso or Madzibaba.

Ngwazi has invented his humour-laden sungura while Mutambi sounds like Madzibaba or Macheso.

Motsi is trying his best and has shown a lot of potential.

The biggest challenge in this genre is the lack of creativity.

Besides the sungura dosage, variety is also guaranteed.

Jah Master, DJ  Fantan and his Chillspot gang of Levels and Ribhe, will cater for Zim dancehall lovers.

Mbira lovers should look forward to Andy Muridzo and Diana “Mangwenya” Samkange.

Gospel lovers will be catered for by Mathias Mhere and Argatha Murudzwa.

Those who love revolutionary songs have Last “Tambaoga” Chiangwa and Chief Hwenje, of the Mai Welly fame, to look forward to.

Kanindo lovers will have Shantel Sithole while rapper Takura Shonhayi, who has won his battle against drugs, will cater for Zim Hip Hop lovers.
