A court case in 2009 exposed Davies Mugadza as the face behind masked character, Dr Zobha, but a show at Las Vegas nightclub last Friday created another puzzle.

Mugadza shared the turntables (side-by-side) with a Dr Zobha character who delivered a polished act.

The masked man was Dr Zobha in every aspect. His step, voice, humour and funny behaviour were spot on.

So, if Mugadza is Dr Zobha, who played the faceless character on Friday?

For many years, Mugadza had been linked to Dr Zobha until his ex-girlfriend revealed in court, during a maintenance case, that he was indeed behind the shadowy character.

And the Friday event raised new questions about the wayward character who enjoys being called “mudhara”.

Mugadza could be the “real” Dr Zobha, but it appears there are other people that can also convincingly play the character. People are good at imitating characters and it becomes confusing when they do so in masks.

As widely speculated, Mugadza might have hired the person who played Dr Zobha on Friday. In that case it is highly possible that, under extreme circumstances, these people can exchange roles without being noticed.

Of course, the real Dr Zobha graces most events. However, if many people can play the character, there is room for fake Dr Zobhas and it is difficult to prove.

Remember how one man made noise claiming to be the original Ajigija (masked character who plays with children) when there are so many of them around.

If the same happens to Dr Zobha, it will be difficult for him to do so because he does not want to personally give away his identity.

After the show Mugadza said it was good the world had seen that he was not Dr Zobha.

“Like I said before, I am not Dr Zobha. I have never said I am Zobha. Zobha has never said he is Mugadza. You saw how things happened. Mudhara came to the show to bless my farewell party and he did what he knows best,” he said.

The man behind the mask said he is Zobha Mandizvidza from Gumbonzvanda and he is the only Zobha in the country.

Other disc jockeys that graced the occasion were DJ Flabba, Rumbi Moyo, DJ Chamvari, Zain and Skwila.

The event was a farewell party for Mugadza, who left Power FM and will next month join new radio station YaFM that is based in Zvishavane.

However, it was not the first time that he has appeared in public with a character purported to be Dr Zobha.

He has done so at the Harare Agricultural Show, Zimbabwe International Trade Fair and some corporate functions.

Las Vegas manager Yasin Dhala said they were happy the show was a success.

“It was a good show. I am happy people came in their numbers to see how Mugadza and Dr Zobha would do their show.

“Most people are now confused. It is not clear who Dr Zobha is because Mugadza, who is believed to be behind the character, was here with Mudhara,” said Yasin.

Dr Zobha and DJ Flabba take turns to spin the wheels at Las Vegas every Sunday.
