talented musicians to emerge on the dancehall scene is without doubt, but the question to ask is will he draw the huge crowds as he normally does at every other gig in the capital?
Other heavy hitters on the line-up are some of Harare’s finest club DJs in the form of Smoove, TK Beats, Vjay and Storm, who was once Sprite DJ of the Year. Well, with only a day to go before the gig which coincides with D&L’s third anniversary, excitement has reached fever pitch with several dancehall pundits expecting nothing short of a thriller.
“It’s the big deal and I can’t miss this one,” Kudzi Simango said.
Another fan, Clemence Saruchera, said he was excited to attend the show since Winky D rarely performs in nightclubs. Rumbidzayi Chirinda said the gig was coming at a time when most people will be celebrating Valentine’s Day. Lansi Matonga said he was a big fan of both D&L as well as Winky D.
“It is good to see all my favourite artistes doing things together and it is going to be a thriller throughout,” he said. Coming hot on the heels of a successful pre-Valentine’s Day gig at the joint, the after-party coincides with D&L Entertainment’s third anniversary. Apparently D&L stands for Dee Nosh and L Roy, two of the most sought-after club DJs who started rocking the decks during the days when Stars Studio was the place to be.
It has been three years now and D&L have rocked most dance floors drawing huge crowds to their shows. L Roy has since joined Power FM where he is the main man during the popular lunchtime listening slot. He also hosts a youth television programme called “YTG” (Young Talented and Gifted) which airs on Saturdays.
When it comes to mixing and scratching on the decks, nobody compares to L Roy. He has also won the Lion Lager DJ contest, a feat which many of his contemporaries are yet to achieve. Dee Nosh has been there and done that. He is popularly known for his versatility and steady rocking on the decks.
According to Dee Nosh, real name Kudzai Matondo, they were bringing Winky D to liven up things at the party.
“Winky D is one of the talented musicians in the country and we are delighted to celebrate with him on our anniversary as a company and as the top DJs. We want to promote local talent as much as we can so that we develop the sector into a viable one.
“There is going to be lots of stuff happening at the club with guest appearances from other club DJs in the likes of Smoove, Storm and TK Beats. As you might be aware, there plans to bring Junior Brown, Maskiri and others to Circus,” he said.
For those not in the know, Winky D started his career as a DJ and later swapped the decks for the microphone using backtracks, but soon realised that this did not go down well with his audiences and the ever-changing trends in show business. He soon abandoned the idea as this did not give him the flexibility he needed during live shows and came up with the Vigilance Band, which features his young brother Layan Musoja.
Winky D is one of the few if not the first dancehall artiste to try out a live band though initially this was risky but worth it.
This he confirmed in the song “Wakasara” where he talks about using the guitars instead of backtracks.
