Winky D to close Zahara concert

African music sensation Zahara for what promises to be a thrilling night.
“We have done the programme for the event and Winky D is expected to close the concert in grand style. However, those who wish to watch Zahara will have to come early so that they don’t miss a thing,” Tawanda Chingara of Hardcore World Entertainment, the organisers said.
Other performers on the night include Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana, Alexio Kawara, Roki and Buddo Knox. Both Zahara and Winky D will top the bill at Bulawayo’s Queen Sports Club where they will stage another gig on Saturday.
The National Arts Merit Award winner, who also goes by the moniker, “The Ninja President”, is fast becoming a crowd puller with his scintillating performances and lyrical prowess.
Born Wallace Chirimuko, Winky D has earned huge respect and admiration from a crossover audience. The youths sing his music while the elderly cannot help but enjoy the vibes.
Basking in the hugely successful new album titled “PaKitchen”, Winky D will be out to prove that he is still at the top of his game when he delivers his chart topping hit “Taitirana”.
The song features upcoming chanter Lipsy (real name Tendazvaitwa Chitimbe) who has proved that women are as good as men in reggae/dancehall.
Lipsy has brought a refreshing angle to Winky D’s sound as she is gifted with a velvet voice that complements his patois-inspired chants.
According to music critic Fred Zindi, “the ferocity of his rhymes, which are just as powerful will leave one with no doubt that all Winky D’s tunes are well thought out. Every time he brings something new to the gig, the crowd responds with unguarded wild screams until the excitement level is barely legal.”
Usually dressed up in Sizzla-type bobble hat, Winky D is never short of surprises, something that has made him one of the biggest drawcards in Zimbabwean dancehall music as he appeals even more to the ghetto youths.
He started his career as a DJ and later swapped the decks for the microphone using backtracks but soon realised that these did not go down well with his audiences and the ever changing trends in show business.
He soon abandoned the idea as this did not give him the flexibility he needed during live shows and came up with the Vigilance Band.
As part of his group, Winky D is well complemented by his younger brother Layan Musoja on backing vocals and the two have great chemistry on stage.
Winky D is one of the few if not the first dancehall artiste to try out live band though initially this was an experiment, it was highly risky but worth it.
This was confirmed in the song “Wakasara” where he talks about using the guitars instead of backtracks. Like the old adage says, “if you can’t beat him join him” Winky D is likely to have more fans in his orbit than any other dancehall artiste in Zimbabwe.
