Winning souls through sport

THE need to promote fellowship and health amongst the youth in churches has seen the formation of various sporting leagues across Zimbabwe.

The Sunday Mail Religion will from this week carry the “Sport and Religion Column” through which our readers will enjoy updates on the numerous sporting activities happening within churches.

Since this is our first instalment, we focus only on one league in Chitungwiza West, where the exciting 14-team AFM Liga is in Week Five and there is exciting competition amongst the likes of Bethel, El Shaddai, Mt Zion and Azusa.

The soccer league, which covers AFM congregations in Zengeza and St Mary’s townships was the brainchild of the AFM provincial youth executive led by Overseer Collen Dandure and Reverend Webster Zuze, with the goal of promoting sport in the Chitungwiza West family.

The province has 14 assemblies in total and they are all participating in soccer, volleyball and netball in organised Christian leagues.

“This not only helps us win souls for Christ but also builds fellowship amongst the saints, uniting and encouraging love amongst young people.

“Sporting activities create networking in this environment where mingling with great minds has become vital,” says Reverend Zuze.

Bethel who beat Adonai 3-0 at home last weekend leads the Chitungwiza AFM Liga with 13 points and enjoys a superior goal difference over El Shaddai who have the same number of points.

El Shaddai also won by the same margin against Malati at Tangenhamo Primary School in Zengeza Five while Mt Zion thrashed Faith Centre 6-0.

We invite those with currently running leagues to email feedback at [email protected]
