ZIMBABWE international forward Tawanda Chirewa has joined English League One side Barnsley on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

The 22-year-old, who spent the last part of last season on loan at Hudderfield Town, is apparently seeking playing opportunities, having only played twice for the Wolves first-team in the English Premiership in the current campaign.

He featured as a substitute against Aston Villa and West Ham United and also made six appearances for the Under-21s group.

“I’m at a stage of my career right now where I have got a point to prove,” Chirewa told the Barnsley website.

“I need to show what I can do and really impact games. The manager (Conor Hourihane), when I spoke to him, was on the same wavelength, and he sold me amazing ideas of how this club wants to go in these next couple of months.

“Watching them play, the bravery they show is something which I want to show, bravery to go and impact games and win some football games in this league.”

The midfielder signed for Wolves from Ipswich Town in 2023 and has played 12 times since then, while also spending time on loan at Derby County in the Championship and Huddersfield Town in the third tier.

In December he featured at the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, representing Zimbabwe in all three group matches against Egypt, Angola and South Africa.

Now he joins Barnsley, who sit 15th in League One. Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane was excited with the deal and praised Chirewa’s qualities.

“We’re really pleased to bring Tawanda in. He’s a young player with genuine top-level experience, and that’s a big asset for us.

“His Premier League exposure and ability to play across the front line give us another dimension going into the final stretch of the season. He’s hungry, he’s quick, and he fits the style we want to play.”

Chirewa arrives at Oakwell with valuable Premier League experience, having made 12 Premier League appearances for Wolves since joining the club in 2023.

He made his Premier League debut as a second-half substitute in a 0-0 draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2024.

A versatile and dynamic forward, Chirewa has further developed through loan spells at Derby County and Huddersfield Town, gaining experience across the Championship and League One.

Born in Chelmsford and now a full Zimbabwe international, Chirewa began his career at Ipswich Town, becoming the club’s second youngest ever debutant at just 16 years and 31 days.

He joined Wolves in 2023 and quickly progressed into senior football, making appearances in both the Premier League and FA Cup.

The 22-year-old will link up with Barnsley for the rest of the campaign and is the club’s fifth new arrival of the winter window following the earlier additions of Owen Goodman, Scott Banks, Eoghan O’Connell and Charlie Lennon.

He spent the second half of last term on loan at Huddersfield Town, making 13 appearances for the Terriers after joining in the 2024 winter window, including eight starts. The wingman was on loan at Derby County in the first half of 2024-25.
