A 60-year-old Lower Gweru woman was burnt beyond recognition when a hut she was sleeping in caught fire, police have said.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the fire occurred last week at Plot Number 174 Ndabambi Village, Chief Sogwala.
He identified the woman as Lucia Ndlovu. “On Tuesday and at around 8pm, Ms Lucia Ndlovu (60) was sleeping in her hut alone when fellow villagers noticed thick smoke coming from her homestead,” said Insp Mahoko.
He said when the villagers rushed to Ndlovu’s homestead to investigate, they found two huts, one used as a kitchen and the other as bedroom, on fire.
“The villagers tried to put out the fire but failed owing to the huge flames. They later searched from the debris in the gutted down bedroom and recovered the charred remains of Ms Ndlovu,” he said.
Insp Mahoko said the matter was reported to the police who attended to the scene.
“The body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem,” he said.
