THE embattled MDC-T has failed to field a candidate for local authority by-elections in Pfura Rural District Council ward 32 scheduled for October 19, leaving the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to declare Zanu-PF’s Cde Katanha Masha the duly elected councillor for the area, bringing to 1 497 the number of wards Zanu-PF has won against MDC-T’s 442 in the local authority elections.
ZEC said in a statement yesterday that no other nomination papers, apart from those of Cde Masha had been accepted for the ward at the close of the nomination court. The by-election was scheduled to be held on October 19 together with those of Victoria Falls Municipality ward 9 and Gokwe South RDC ward 11. The by-elections in Victoria Falls and Gokwe will proceed as planned.
In Victoria Falls’ ward 9 by-elections, Cde Sambulo Mpofu (Zanu-PF) would battle against MDC-T’s Somveli Dhlamini, Atient Ncube (MDC) and Julius Phiri (Zapu). Cde Kutonho Jonias (Zanu-PF) would contest against MDC-T’s Victor Nsingo and Mike Pawarikanda in Gokwe South RDC by-elections.
“Polling shall take place on 19 October 2013 from 7am to 7pm . . . for election to the office of councillor for the said wards,” ZEC said.
