Woman burnt to death trying to save property

Matabeleland North police spokesperson Sergeant Eglon Nkala confirmed the incident, which happened on Sunday in Sivuwe Village at about 8.30 pm.
Sgt Nkala said Gertrude Mhlanga was taking supper with her husband, Mr George Ndlovu, in their grass thatched kitchen hut when it suddenly caught fire.

“The couple was having supper in their grass thatched kitchen hut when a spark of fire sprang up from the fire place and set alight the hut.
“They failed to extinguish the  fire and started removing  property from the kitchen,” said Sgt Nkala.

He said as the woman tried to   save some of her property, the roof   of the hut collapsed, trapping her inside.
“The man failed to rescue his wife as the fire had engulfed the whole  hut. After the fire stopped, he managed to retrieve the body of his wife who was already dead,” said Sgt Nkala.

He said no foul play was suspected.
“As for Mr Ndlovu, the husband, he sustained burns on his chest, feet, hands and stomach and is now admitted at St Luke’s Hospital for treatment,” said Sgt Nkala.
